SpartanNash was formed when Spartan Stores, based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, merged with the Nash Finch Company based in Minneapolis, Minnesota in November of 2013. Both companies have long and rich histories of serving their communities. Nash Finch started as a family-owned business back in 1885 when brothers Fred, Edgar and
Willis Nash opened a small candy and tobacco store in Devils Lake, North Dakota. The first non-family employee, Harry B. Finch, joined the Nash Brothers as a 14-year old stock boy in 1889 and worked his way up in the organization. In subsequent years the company became known as the Nash-Finch Company with Harry as the company president.
Spartan Stores began in 1917 when 100 independent retailers banded together to purchase in bulk and pass the savings along to their customers. In 1918, 43 of the original retailers signed the Articles of Incorporation for the Grand Rapids Wholesale Grocery Company; their first purchase was a boxcar of sugar.
Both companies have grown throughout the years, expanding retail and wholesale operations. In 1995, Nash Finch acquired Military Distributors of Virginia (MDV), and our commitment to serving our military heroes whether at home or abroad began.
Today, SpartanNash is a Fortune 400 company and the fifth largest food distributor in the United States. We also are the largest food distributor serving U.S. military commissaries and exchanges in the world, in terms of revenue. We currently operate more than 165 corporate-owned grocery stores in ten states, and distribute to 2,100 independent locations in more than 46 states. Our military operations also serve the District of Columbia, Europe, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Bahrain and Egypt.
Retail and military operations each represent 30% of our business; wholesale distribution is our largest business segment with 40%.
Our retail banners include Bag ‘n Save, Dan’s Supermarkets, D&W Fresh Markets, Econofoods, Family Fare Supermarkets, Family Fresh Market, Family Thrift Center, Forest Hills Foods, Fresh City Market, No Frills, Sun Mart, Supermercado Nuestra Familia, ValuLand, and VG’s Food and Pharmacy. We operate 12 wholesale food distribution centers and 8 military distribution centers.
Our vision is to be a best-in-class business that feels local, where relationships matter.
We are guided by our core values of customer focus, innovation, patriotism, teamwork, respect, integrity, accountability, and celebration and fun. The key to our success is our family of 16,000 associates, who put our customers, consumers, communities, and their co-workers first, each and every day.
Giving back is part of our commitment. Each year, we donate more than 3 million pounds of food to help fight hunger, and collaborate with more than 5,000 community partners to advance education and vital services. We also sponsor over 1,900 events a year in the communities we serve, and volunteer thousands of hours with our community partners.
The SpartanNash Foundation is the charitable giving arm of the Company and is focused on providing grants to nonprofit community partners that assist our neighbors who are in need of food and/or shelter, and also provides assistance to our servicemen and women and our veterans, who have given so much to our Country.
