Changes ahead for Omaha supermarket landscape
Bag ‘N Save and No Frills Supermarkets to undergo major remodels
as part of SpartanNash’s long-term investment in eastern Nebraska

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN – February 26, 2015 – The Omaha supermarket landscape is changing – literally.  SpartanNash, owner of 25 Bag ‘n Save, No Frills, and Nuestra Familia Supermercado stores in the greater Omaha area, announced today that it is making a significant investment in the coming months to remodel two Bag ‘N Save and four No Frills Supermarkets. This reinvestment plan is part of SpartanNash’s long standing commitment to improving the communities it serves while ensuring its neighborhood supermarkets are the preferred destination for eastern Nebraska shoppers.

In November of 2013, Spartan Stores, based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, merged with the Nash Finch Company, based in Edina, Minnesota, to form SpartanNash.  In April of 2012, Nash Finch purchased the 12 Bag ’N Save stores from the Shrago family, and in July of 2012 Nash Finch purchased the 18 No Frills stores from Fred Witecy.  Both owners had been independent customers of the Nash Finch Company.

“Following the merger of two great companies,” notes Ted Adornato, Executive Vice President for SpartanNash’s Retail Operations, “we made the decision to analyze all our retail markets and determine where we should invest for the future.  The greater Omaha area with 25 stores rose to the top.”

“In 2015, we are focusing our attention on eastern Nebraska,” notes SpartanNash’s Tom Swanson, Divisional Vice President, Retail Operations – West. “Omaha and the surrounding communities are wonderful places to live, work and raise a family, and they represent an important market for our SpartanNash retail store base. We believe this current reinvestment in the Bag ‘N Save and No Frills Supermarkets will ensure our store guests have the best experience when they are here, and this enhancement will allow us to introduce and offer some exciting new products to this community in our newly remodeled stores.”  Swanson did emphasize that “one thing that won’t change is our friendly associates who have formed relationships with our customers in these stores – and the community at large.”

Additional information will be released once construction details are finalized.

As part of ‘right sizing’ the market following the merger, SpartanNash also has analyzed the entire eastern Nebraska grocery market – both in terms of its corporate owned stores, independent stores which it supplies, and its competition.

“We must continually evaluate our retail operations and make strategic decisions regarding investments and consolidations that benefit our entire 160+ store retail operations,” notes Swanson.  “At times, we must make the tough decision to close a store, and while it’s never an easy decision to consolidate store locations, however, it is necessary to right size the number of stores for the community we are serving.”

On Friday, February 20, 2015, associates at the following No Frills and Bag ‘N Save were notified that the stores will consolidate operations and close in mid-March:

  • Bag ‘n Save, 2011 North 156th Street, Omaha, Nebraska
  • No Frills, 909 Fort Crook Road North, Bellevue, Nebraska
  • No Frills, 501 Highway 39 North, Denison, Iowa

“This decision is not a reflection of our hard-working associates at these locations,” continues Tom. “They have all worked very hard over the years, and we are grateful for their contributions and dedication to SpartanNash. We are working with our associates to relocate their positions at nearby stores and provide outplacement services as needed.”

The stores have begun sales to reduce inventory.
