Blue Star Mothers to Hold “Shop for the Troops” Drives at Kalamazoo Area D&Ws
Portage and Parkview Stores to Host Collections for Military Care Packages
Grand Rapids, MI, September 15, 2015 — For the fifth year, two D&W Fresh Market stores will host Greater Kalamazoo Area Blue Star Mothers of America “Shop for the Troops” drives.
Customers will have the opportunity to purchase and donate nonperishable and health and beauty care items for care packages for active military service members.
The drives will run on three different dates at two Kalamazoo-area stores:
- Friday, September 25, 2015, 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., D&W, 2103 Parkview Avenue, Kalamazoo, MI
- Saturday, October 17, 2015, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m, D&W, 525 Romence Road, Portage, MI
- Saturday, October 24, 2015, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., D&W, 2103 Parkview Avenue, Kalamazoo, MI
According to the Blue Star Mothers, service members’ wish list items include:
- Tuna or chicken in a pouch
- Peanut butter
- Ritz Crackers
- Breakfast bars
- Granola bars
- Trail mix
- Individual drink mix packets
- Baby wipes
- Foot powder
- Stick deodorant
- Disposable razors
The care packages will be assembled with community volunteers during “Operation Holiday Cheer” on November 7, 2015, at the Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan Regional Training Center (601 W. Maple St., Kalamazoo, MI 49008). Packages will be distributed to those who have requested them, from all branches of the Armed Forces, and will be sent to places such as Afghanistan, the Middle East, the Far East (including Korea, Japan and Africa) and to deployed Navy ships. Care packages will also include thank you cards written by local schoolchildren.

The Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. is a 501(c)3 service organization consisting of mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, foster mothers and female legal guardians who have children serving in the military, guard or reserves, or children who are veterans.
