Fresh City Market Teams With Purdue Sports Nutrition Program’s New Community Garden

West Lafayette, IN – June 30, 2015 – Jeff Maurer, Co-Owner of Fresh City Market on the campus of Purdue University, has announced a partnership between the grocery store and a new community garden operated by Purdue’s Sports Nutrition program. The garden serves Purdue student athletes who are also responsible for the care and management of the garden. To date, more than 40 volunteer student athletes and staff have tilled, planted, watered, weeded and watched as their efforts are starting to take shape.

“We are delighted to lend our support to the community garden by providing the funding for seeds and plants. This is a great example of exploring ways to eat healthier and eat locally, and those are the beliefs and principles of Fresh City Market,” said Maurer.

Student athletes and staff have planted tomatoes, kale, peppers, zucchini, squash and a variety of herbs in anticipation of their bountiful harvest. Although the garden is relatively small at just under 2,000 square feet, Lauren Link, a registered sports dietician with Purdue Athletics, and coordinator of the community garden program, is counting on the program’s success and hoping the garden can become more expansive in the future. Link said, “We’re not just teaching our student athletes the fundamentals of how to grow and maintain a garden, we’re also teaching them how to eat healthy and nutritious. The garden volunteers will take home what they grow and learn how to best prepare what they harvest. It’s our ultimate goal, however, to have a larger garden so we can also provide the general community with vegetables and herbs from our garden.”

Maurer added, “We will continue to support this program as long as they need us, and we’re so very delighted to help in any manner we can. Yes, we’re a proud supporter of Purdue Athletics, but this initiative goes beyond many of the programs we sponsor and addresses the core of our business – food, health, nutrition and education.”
