More than 175 SpartanNash associates to take place in Helping Hands in the Community Day in Minneapolis
Day of community service will benefit nine area non-profit organizations

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – For the fifth consecutive year, SpartanNash associates will take part in the Company’s Helping Hands in the Community Day on Wednesday, June 29.

Helping Hands is a day of community service in which SpartanNash – and its predecessor the Nash Finch Company – associates complete group volunteer projects at non-profit organizations throughout the Twin Cities area.  As the nation’s fifth largest food distributor and leading distributor to U.S. military commissaries and exchanges in the world, SpartanNash owns and operates 12 retail stores in Minnesota, including five Econofoods and two SunMart locations. The company owns 160 total stores in 10 states and distributes to 2,100 independent retailers in 47 states.

“Helping Hands is a great tradition that began in our Minnesota office, and we are excited for our associates to continue giving back to our communities in this way,” said Dennis Eidson, SpartanNash president and CEO. “The success of our company is built upon being good neighbors and partners in the communities we serve. Many of our distribution, retail and corporate associates already volunteer their time regularly throughout the year, so having hundreds of us come together and take a day to give back is very special.”

Volunteer groups will leave the Edina, Minn. corporate office on buses beginning at 8:30 a.m., travelling to their respective project sites for day-long work projects including meal preparation, landscaping, deep cleaning, donation intake and sorting, interior and exterior painting and more.

More than 175 SpartanNash associations will volunteer more than 1,000 hours at nine different non-profits during the 2016 community service day.

Community partners will include Bridge for Youth, Casa de Esperanza, Catholic Charities, Fisher House, Habitat for Humanity, Loaves & Fishes, Neighbors Inc., Perspectives and Sojourner Project – many of whom are also prior recipients of SpartanNash Foundation and NFC Foundation grants.

The inaugural Helping Hands in the Community Day took place when Nash Finch employees from the company’s Edina location spent a day volunteering together in June 2011. Since then, associates at the Minnesota corporate office have participated annually, and in 2016, the Helping Hands day was expanded to SpartanNash’s corporate headquarters in Grand Rapids, Mich.

To date, more than 2,000 SpartanNash associates have helped contribute more than 10,000 volunteer hours to more than 40 different community partners during Helping Hands days in Minnesota and Michigan.

SpartanNash has placed a heightened commitment to volunteerism in 2016, challenging its associates from across the country to collectively give 15,000 hours of their time to volunteer efforts. Associates are encouraged to find the causes that they are most passionate about and volunteer in their local communities. To date, SpartanNash associates have collectively volunteered more than 6,000 hours.

“Our associates already give back in so many ways to the communities where we live and work, but Helping Hands days are especially exciting because of the spirit of volunteerism we all share,” said Kathy Mahoney, SpartanNash’s chief legal officer, SpartanNash Foundation trustee and a founder of the first Helping Hands Day in Minneapolis. “The amount of work that gets done in a single day is astounding, and it’s just one small way we can say thank you to our non-profit partners for the work they do all year long.”

SpartanNash’s MDV military division, based in Norfolk, Virginia, will host their inaugural Helping Hands Day this fall. MDV is the leading, gold standard distributor to U.S. commissaries and exchanges in the world. They exist to serve our military heroes, whether at home or aboard.
