Miller Poultry Donates over 10,000 Pounds of Chicken through SpartanNash Stores to Michigan Food Pantries, Serving over 31,000 Residents

Grand Rapids, Mich., Dec. 22, 2015 — Family Fare Supermarket in Manistee, Michigan, and VG’s in Fenton, Michigan, both SpartanNash corporate-owned stores, were the settings for Miller Poultry’s donation of 10,400 pounds of chicken to three local food pantries this December.

Salvation Army and Matthew 25:35 in Manistee received 4,000 pounds of chicken and 1,200 pounds of chicken sausage on December 9, and the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan received a similar donation on December 10. The donations will feed 31,200 at-risk residents through the three pantries.

According to Meredith Gremel, SpartanNash Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Communications, this is exceptionally good news, which comes at a most needed time. “This generous donation from Miller Poultry will serve 15,600 Manistee residents and 15,600 Fenton-area residents this holiday season. In this tough economy, there is an increasing demand on the food pantries. It has been our honor to partner with Miller Poultry since 2008 to assist with this distribution through our Family Fare and VG’s locations. Since we began this partnership, more than 83,000 pounds have been donated to help families in need throughout Michigan. Miller Poultry has been supplying our stores with fresh, all natural, hormone free chicken for many years. They are a tremendous partner.”

In Manistee, Family Fare Store Director A.J. Swander assisted with the distribution of the donation, and in Fenton, VG’s Store Director Steve Scheidler assisted.

At both locations, Miller Poultry representatives Len Neeb and Jim Cataline were on hand to assist with the distribution.

Neeb notes: “Miller Poultry’s goal has always been to provide the finest, freshest and healthiest chicken available in the market today. We consider it an honor to give back to the communities that support us all year long. These donations will go directly to the food pantries that assist families all year long, which is important to us, especially this time of year. We partner with SpartanNash, Family Fare, and VG’s because of our mutual commitment to improving the communities in which we live and work.”

During the month of December, VG’s also helped Food Bank of Eastern Michigan with the Scan Away Hunger program, which allowed customers to donate $1, $5, $10 or a bag full of groceries for $17. This “Give the Gift of Food” raised over $5,600 with 100 percent of donations going to feed the hungry throughout Eastern Michigan.
