SpartanNash Foundation, store guests raise $310,000 during companywide effort to support military heroes, their families
100 percent of dollars raised to benefit nonprofit partners, Operation Homefront and Honor and Remember
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Together with its store guests and company associates, the SpartanNash Foundation’s scan campaign to support military heroes and their families was its most successful companywide retail fundraising effort to date – raising $310,000 on behalf of Operation Homefront and Honor and Remember.
Between June 27 and July 8, store guests who visited any participating SpartanNash-owned retail store or fuel center in eight states had the opportunity to donate $1, $5 or $10 at any checkout lane, with 100 percent of dollars raised split evenly between the two nonprofit partner organizations.
“At SpartanNash, we are very excited about the overwhelming support shown for our military heroes during the latest SpartanNash Foundation retail scan – our most successful scan to date,” said Meredith Gremel, vice president of corporate affairs and communications and the executive director of the SpartanNash Foundation. “One of our company’s core values is patriotism, and SpartanNash and the SpartanNash Foundation are deeply committed to supporting our military heroes in the communities we serve. Through our partnership with Operation Homefront and Honor and Remember, we assisted in raising awareness and funds for military heroes and their loved ones, while honoring the sacrifices they have made for our freedom.”
Operation Homefront’s mission is to build strong, stable, and secure military families so they can thrive — not simply struggle to get by — in the communities they have worked so hard to protect.
“We are absolutely thrilled to receive this wonderful support from SpartanNash, as they clearly share our dedication to that very special group of our fellow citizens who have done so much for all of us,” said Brig. Gen. (ret.) John I. Pray Jr., president and CEO of Operation Homefront. “We are incredibly grateful to their commitment to our Critical Financial Assistance program, which will help thousands of military families address short-term financial challenges so that they do not become long-term financial hardships.
“The amazing generosity of SpartanNash, its customers and its associates is extremely important as we continue to help our veterans thrive in the communities they have worked so hard to protect.”
For more than 15 years, Operation Homefront has provided critical financial assistance, transitional and permanent housing and family support services to prevent short-term needs from turning into chronic, long-term struggles. Recognized for superior performance by leading independent charity oversight groups, 92 percent of Operation Homefront expenditures go directly to programs that support tens of thousands of military families each year.
Honor and Remember
The mission of Honor and Remember is to create, establish and promote a nationally recognized flag to fly continuously as a visible reminder to all Americans of the lives lost in defense of our national freedoms. The flag is meant to be a public symbol of appreciation that honors all military lives lost while serving since our nation’s inception.
“A huge thank you to SpartanNash and the SpartanNash Foundation for your sincere commitment to Honor and Remember and its mission to touch the lives of America’s Gold Star families,” said George Lutz, who founded Honor and Remember after losing his son in Iraq in 2005. “We have presented thousands of flags to families of the fallen, in addition to working tirelessly with state officials to pass legislation in 23 states, adopting the flag as an officially recognized symbol of the sacrifices made by members of our military and the lives lost in service to our country.”
Personalized flags are regularly presented to individual families of fallen service members. Each personalized flag contains the name, theater of operation and date of death of the individual. The flags are presented at both private and public occasions.
SpartanNash is a national partner of Honor and Remember, underwriting personal flag presentations to families of the fallen and flying the Honor and Remember flag at all company facilities. The flag artwork is also displayed on SpartanNash’s fleet of tractor trailers, which travel more than 67 million miles per year.
In 2017, a portion of the SpartanNash Foundation scan campaign funding underwrote Honor and Remember flags presented as part of the organization’s Run for the Fallen – a five-month, 6,000-mile journey to pay tribute to more than 2,000 fallen servicemembers.

“Each year, in addition to our Foundation support, SpartanNash contributes thousands of dollars, products and volunteer hours to military and veterans organizations and events, and we are proud to have teamed up with Operation Homefront, Honor and Remember and our store guests to support our military heroes in this unique and powerful way,” Gremel said. “As a veteran-friendly employer, we also have nearly 800 self-identified veterans who work for our country, so this cause is especially close to our hearts.”
Since 2016, the SpartanNash Foundation has raised and granted nearly $800,000 for its patriotic partners through its retail scan campaigns, benefitting veterans service organizations including Give an Hour, Fisher House Foundation, Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc., Disabled Veterans National Foundation – and this year’s partners Operation Homefront and Honor and Remember.
The retail scan campaign supporting Operation Homefront and Honor and Remember is the third of four fundraising campaigns the SpartanNash Foundation will conduct in 2018. To date, the SpartanNash Foundation has raised $773,200 on behalf of local Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics and patriotic partners in eight states.
