In 2011, we partnered with Goodwill Industries of Greater Grand Rapids for the first time, and our associates donated 3,000 pounds of materials to Goodwill.
Over the last six years, SpartanNash has significantly expanded our Earth Week partnership with Goodwill. In 2016, we partnered with 21 different Goodwill organizations in 14 states to offer on-site Goodwill donation drives at 43 grocery stores, 18 distribution centers and our three service centers during Earth Week (April 15 – 24). In total, our associates and customers collectively donated 50,261 pounds of materials (avoiding landfills) to Goodwill.
Since 2011, we have donated more than 121,500 pounds of materials in total, which equates to approximately 26,000 hours of workforce training provided by Goodwill to individuals in our communities.
In 2015, we also created an internal competition where the retail store and distribution center that collected the most donations for the year won the Earth Week traveling trophy and bragging rights for a year. In keeping with the Earth Week theme, our traveling trophies are made from repurposed trophies or reclaimed wood. Our Sioux Falls, N.D. distribution center and our VG’s in Owosso, Mich. won the competitions in 2016. Before that, our Omaha, Neb. distribution center and D&W Fresh Market at Knapp’s Crossing in Grand Rapids, Mich. won.
In 2016, we also hosted an “earth-themed” bakery contest encouraging our bakery departments to get involved in our Earth Week celebrations. More than 30 of our store bakeries submitted photos of bakery items to compete in the contest, and 500 people voted on Facebook to select our winner. Our D&W Fresh Market in Cascade, Mich. won the competition.
In 2014, Goodwill Industries of Greater Grand Rapids awarded SpartanNash the Goodwill Donated Goods Partner of the Year award for our Earth Week donation drive efforts.
