Family Fare Penny Event Encourages Michigan Shoppers to Turn Small Coins into Big Impact with Double Rewards

During the one-day event, store guests can turn 100 pennies into $1 in cash PLUS $1 on their Rewards card

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Dec. 9, 2025 – Food solutions company SpartanNash®, a member of the C&S Wholesale Grocers family of companies, today announced all Family Fare® locations in Michigan will be holding a one-day penny event on Saturday, December 13.

The Small Coins, BIG IMPACT penny event encourages store guests to convert spare pennies into double rewards — turning 100 pennies into $1 in cash plus $1 on their Family Fare Rewards card.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 13, shoppers are invited to bring pennies into any of the 57 Family Fare locations in Michigan, exchanging pennies for double their value while helping those who prefer to pay in cash when shopping.

There is a minimum of 50 cents in pennies exchanged per transaction (resulting in 50 cents in cash and 50 cents on the shopper’s Rewards card) and a maximum of $100 in pennies exchanged per transaction (resulting in $100 in cash and $100 on the shopper’s Rewards card).

“Clean out your couch cushions, check your junk drawers and break open your piggy banks,” said Jay Mahabir, Vice President, Retail Operations. “Our Small Coins, BIG IMPACT is a great way for us to reward our shoppers for sharing their two cents — or more! — with us, all while bringing in pennies to support our store operations and those who prefer to pay in cash.”

With the U.S. Department of the Treasury discontinuing penny production, the Federal Reserve has implemented restrictions on penny distribution. This proactive step allows Family Fare and other SpartanNash-operated retail stores to maintain accuracy and fairness as the company waits for official U.S. government guidance on rounding practices.
