Tony Sarsam was named President and Chief Executive Officer in September 2020.
Tony has three decades of leadership experience in the food industry and has a deep understanding of every facet of the consumer-packaged goods and food distribution business.
Previously, Tony led Borden Dairy as CEO, where he focused on developing a people-first culture and a renewed commitment to innovation and service. Before joining Borden, Tony served as CEO of Ready Pac Foods.
Prior to leading Ready Pac, Tony was President of the Nestlé USA Direct Store Delivery Company, which served the Nestlé frozen pizza and ice cream businesses. He also served as Executive Vice President of Sales and Operations at Dreyer’s, which was acquired by Nestlé. Tony began his career at PepsiCo, where he started as an associate engineer and progressed through a series of leadership roles, including Plant Manager, Director of Finance and Region Vice President for Sales and Distribution in the West.
Tony holds a Bachelor of Science, Engineering degree in Chemical Engineering from Arizona State University and a Master of Science in Management from Stanford.
Arif Dar has served as SpartanNash’s Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer since January 2019, responsible for the development and execution of the company’s IT strategy, ensuring alignment with the SpartanNash’s overall business strategy, and providing strategic direction and oversight for the design, development, operation and support of IT systems and programs.
Previously, Arif was the CIO for SC Johnson and Sons, a privately-held global manufacturer of household cleaning supplies and consumer goods. He has also held executive IT positions at Maple Leaf Foods, Bombardier Transportation, General Motors, Tyco International and General Electric.
Arif received his Master of Business Administration degree in MIS and Operations from the University of Western Ontario (Canada); his Master of Science degree in Communication Systems and Radio Engineering from King’s College, University of London (U.K.); and his Bachelor of Science degree in Electronics & Electrical Engineering from the University of Engineering & Technology (Pakistan).
He has his black belt in Six Sigma Quality Training.
Walt Lentz has held the role of Executive Vice President and President, Food Distribution since June 2019, overseeing SpartanNash’s food distribution segment and supply chain responsibilities for the enterprise.
From 2017 to 2019, Walt served as Chief Executive Officer and Chief Supply Chain Officer for Peapod LLC, the grocery eCommerce division of Ahold USA. He has more than 30 years of logistics supply chain experience, including roles as Senior Vice President, Supply Chain Logistics, Planning and Replenishment for Ahold USA and executive roles with the Kellogg Company.
He currently serves as a member of the Michigan Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
Walt holds his Master of Business Administration from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and his Bachelor of Economics from the University of North Carolina.
Kathleen M. Mahoney
Kathy Mahoney joined the company in 2004 and served as General Counsel from 2006 to 2015, when she was appointed Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer, overseeing the company’s legal, aviation, corporate affairs, communications and government relations functions. Previously, she served as President, MDV (2017-2020), in addition to her duties as Chief Legal Officer. In her dual role, she oversaw the strategic goals and P&L initiatives for MDV, in addition to the development and execution of the Defense Commissary Agency’s (DeCA) private label product offerings, which are exclusively distributed by MDV.
Prior to joining the company, Kathy served as Managing Partner of the St. Paul office of Larson King, LLP as well as Partner at Oppenheimer Wolff & Donnelly. She previously served as a law clerk to the Minnesota Supreme Court and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York before joining the Antitrust Division of the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office as the Special Assistant Attorney General.
Kathy serves on the Best Lawyers® Advisory Board, as Chair of the SpartanNash Foundation board of trustees and on the Honor and Remember board of directors.
Kathy earned her juris doctorate from Syracuse University College of Law, where she graduated cum laude. She is a member of the American Bar Association and the Minnesota State, Michigan State and Ramsey County Bar Associations.
Lori Raya was named Chief Merchandising and Marketing Officer in February 2019, responsible for the development and execution of the company’s merchandising and marketing strategy, including product assortment, brand positioning, sales planning, pricing, promotion, sourcing, and distribution for SpartanNash’s independent customers and corporate-owned stores.
Lori joined SpartanNash following a 31-year career with Safeway/Albertsons, serving as Division President of Albertsons from 2015-2018.
She began her career as a store associate, moving up the ranks to store manager, district manager, Vice President of Retail Operations, Group Vice President of Strategic Initiatives and multiple food category senior management positions before serving as the first female divisional president in VON’s 107-year history from 2012-2015.
Lori is an advisory board member for Western Michigan University’s Food and Consumer Package Goods Marketing program as well as a board member for the National Grocers Association. She also serves on the board of the Grand Rapids Symphony and is a member of the Topco Operations Team.
She holds an honorary doctorate in Business from Colorado Mesa University and is a graduate of the USC Marshall School of Business’ Food Industry Executive Program.
Mark Shamber has served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer since September 2017, overseeing finance, mergers and acquisitions, treasury, internal audit, real estate and risk management for the company.
Prior to joining SpartanNash, Mark worked from 2015 to 2017 as an independent consultant. From 2006 to 2015, he served as SVP, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer for United Natural Foods, Inc. (UNFI) — a specialty and organic food distributor. From 2003 to 2006, he served as UNFI’s corporate controller. Earlier in his career, he worked in the audit practice of Ernst & Young LLP and in the finance department of Reebok International Ltd.
Mark is a member of the Financial Executives International, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants.
He is a graduate of Bentley University and is a Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA).
David Sisk was appointed President, MDV in February 2020, overseeing the company’s military division, which is a leading distributor of grocery products to U.S. military commissaries. In his role, he is responsible for developing, implementing and achieving the strategic policies, goals and objectives of the military division, as well as driving the success and growth of the Defense Commissary Agency’s private label product offerings, which are exclusively distributed by MDV.
Prior to joining the company, David served as President and Chief Operating Officer for OSC-WEBco, where he oversaw worldwide strategic plans, profit and loss accountability, personnel and global operations across all military divisions and more than 100 retail categories. He also held increasing responsibilities throughout his 30-year career with Procter & Gamble, including Customer Business Development Manager for the Global Military Division as well as leading U.S. and global shopper-based design and conceptual platform innovation.
He previously served as Chair of the American Logistics Association (ALA) Board of Directors and is a recipient of the ALA’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
Tom Swanson was named Executive Vice President and General Manger, Corporate Retail in March 2020, leading the corporate retail business unit for all corporate retail banners and Quick Stop fuel and convenience centers. He previously served as Senior Vice President and General Manager, Corporate Retail (2018-2020), overseeing the overall strategy for the company’s more than 155 corporate stores in nine states to maximize SpartanNash’s expertise as a retailer and build greater connectivity with distribution customers. He also led the transition and integration of more than 20 Martin’s Super Markets into the SpartanNash family of stores.
Tom has more than 30 years of executive experience in grocery retail, including six years (2012-2018) as Vice President of SpartanNash’s Retail-West operations.
Yvonne Trupiano was named Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources & Corporate Affairs and Communications Officer in March 2018. She provides overall leadership to the company’s human resources and corporate affairs and communications functions, which are responsible for advancing culture, talent and performance. Her primary areas of responsibility include executive and broad-based compensation and benefits, succession planning, talent acquisition and management, learning and development, organizational design and effectiveness, labor relations, HRIS, payroll, diversity and inclusion, and corporate affairs and communications.
Yvonne joined SpartanNash as Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer in October 2016. Previously, she held the position of Vice President, Human Resources at Avis Budget Group, in addition to other HR leadership roles during her tenure there.
Yvonne serves on the Heart of West Michigan United Way Board of Directors and is a trustee of the SpartanNash Foundation.
She holds a Bachelor of Science, Human Resource Development from Oakland University and a Master of Science, Human Resource Administration from Central Michigan University.
