Tips and recipes to make family meals easier and healthier will be shared in-store and online
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – SpartanNash is encouraging its store guests to celebrate National Family Meals Month and share one more meal per week together at home, using items purchased from the grocery store. Sponsored by the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) Foundation, Family Meals Month emphasizes the social, emotional, healthful and financial benefits of family meals, helping families stay strong during these uncertain times.
With the increased amount of time spent at home, Family Meals Month provides an opportunity to commit to having more meals together as a family. According to FMI, kids – from elementary to high school age – who eat meals with their families four or more times per week achieve better test scores and succeed in school.
“Cooking family meals at home decreases excess calorie consumption, increases fruit and vegetable consumption and improves overall dietary habits,” said Deanna Scheid, SpartanNash Health and Wellness Specialist and Registered Dietitian. “Having a well-balanced plate containing grains, lean-proteins and fruits and vegetables has a direct impact on weight, chronic disease and overall immune health, our body’s defense system. We know there can be numerous obstacles to planning, cooking and eating meals together as a family, and SpartanNash and our more than 155 corporate-owned stores are here to make it easier to do so throughout Family Meals Month and beyond.”
Throughout the month, SpartanNash and its Family Fare, Martin’s Super Markets, D&W Fresh Market, VG’s Grocery and Dan’s Supermarket stores are offering fun family meal ideas, nutrition tips, cooking demonstrations featuring Our Family® products and activities to bring the family together around the table using the hashtag #FamilyMealsMonth.
“At SpartanNash, we’re proud to do our part to support our store guests and make family meals easier,” said Tom Swanson, SpartanNash EVP and General Manager, Corporate Retail. “From ready-to-cook proteins, to pre-cut fruits and vegetables and stir fry ingredients, our stores are stocked with ingredients to make it easier for time-starved families to enjoy a quick and easy meal together – all at budget-friendly prices. During Family Meals Month and throughout the year, we hope all our store guests feel supported by our stores and continue to stay strong by enjoying wholesome meals together.”
SpartanNash has been recognized by the Produce for Better Health Foundation with the Retail Have a Plant™ Promoter Award for the past three years. In 2017, SpartanNash also earned the FMI Gold Plate Award for its support of Family Meals Month, recognizing its commitment to raising awareness of the importance of eating healthier, together as a family.
