GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Together with its store guests and company associates, the SpartanNash Foundation’s scan campaign to build hope and affordable housing raised $179,500 on behalf of more than 50 local Habitat for Humanity partners in Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

graphic reading Thank You $179,500 raisedSince 2006, nearly $1.9 million has been raised by SpartanNash and its charitable giving arm – the SpartanNash Foundation – to support local Habitats and hardworking homebuyers.

Habitat for Humanity’s vision is to build a world where everyone has a decent place to live. The organization is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and worldwide through constructing, rehabilitating and preserving homes; by advocating for fair and just housing policies; and by providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions.

Habitat homebuyers invest 300-500 hours of sweat equity into homebuilding and mentorship classes, where they learn the responsibilities and criteria to maintain the Habitat home they purchase on a zero-percent interest rate.

Between Feb. 6 and 17, the SpartanNash Foundation hosted the companywide scan campaign in SpartanNash-owned stores throughout the Midwest, giving store guests the opportunity to donate $1, $5 or $10.

SpartanNash stores teamed up to support local Habitat partners, resulting in the $179,500 total – equivalent to nearly 360 landscaped backyards where children can safely play; 180 education classes for homebuyers regarding financial stability and saving; 120 accessibility ramps to eliminate barriers; or more than 35 kitchen projects for families to gather and create memories around the table.

“The SpartanNash Foundation has a long history of supporting Habitat for Humanity, and we are proud to continue that tradition with this year’s retail scan,” said Meredith Gremel, vice president of corporate affairs and communications and executive director of the SpartanNash Foundation. “The generosity of our store guests during this fundraising campaign was incredible, and we cannot wait to see the difference it will make in our local communities. We are most grateful to all who joined forces with the SpartanNash Foundation and our associates to build hope and affordable housing.”

One hundred percent of all funds raised during the annual scan campaign to secure shelter – one of the Foundation’s areas of support – go directly to local Habitats, supporting home builds, repair projects and veteran families whenever possible. SpartanNash underwrites the costs to run the scan campaign, contributes funding and encourages associates to volunteer with local Habitat partners.

Check presentations to the local Habitats will take place in the coming weeks, hosted by the local SpartanNash-owned stores that raised the most money on behalf of their Habitat partner. Results from the 2019 SpartanNash Foundation scan to build hope and affordable housing include:
