We stand in support of racial equality

Dear valued customers,

The SpartanNash family has been deeply saddened by the tragic events which have unfolded across our nation over the last few weeks. At SpartanNash, we stand in support of racial equality.

Respect is one of our core values, and as such, all of our associates have the responsibility to create a supportive and welcoming environment that values every individual.

To enable our associates to have a better understanding of the importance of cultivating a diverse and inclusive work environment, we have and will continue to provide opportunities for SpartanNash associates to complete dignity and respect training and unconscious bias training. Our goal is to hold ourselves to the highest standards of ethical behavior and demonstrate our core values of respect, accountability and teamwork – not just in times of crisis but every day. Our collective commitment is to achieve true equality and inclusion within our company – and country.

On Monday, June 2, I shared the following letter with our family of 19,000 associates:

To our family of associates –

For the past three months, COVID-19 has challenged our company in ways we could not imagine, yet the adversity we have faced has drawn us together, working as one team to ensure our communities receive the essential food, medicine and household goods they require. I am incredibly proud of our collective efforts; however, recent events remind us that this pandemic is only one of many challenges confronting our communities today.

I am extremely disheartened and deeply saddened by the senseless death of George Floyd. We as Americans must demand more of ourselves and our culture to stop this social injustice that continues to plague our country. We simply must step up and do more to eradicate racism.

As a reminder, at SpartanNash, respect is one of our core values, and as such, we all have the responsibility to create a supportive and welcoming environment that values the contributions of every team member. It is my hope that our family of 19,000 associates will remain supportive and empathetic to the challenges many in the African American community are facing and will play a leadership role in affecting change.

On behalf of our executive leadership team, please know that we stand in support of racial equality. Our workplace should be a trusting place, where we all are comfortable engaging in complex, and sometimes difficult, conversations about diversity and inclusion.

Thank you for your support, for caring for each other and your communities, and best wishes as we prevail together in these trying times.

Thank you for joining us in caring for each other and our communities.
